In addition to the risks of creating nuisances that decrease the quality of daily life in a community, non-hosted short-term rental models (STRs) clear away residences desired to meet the demands of families that are wanting for long-lasting properties. In Ledyard, even however STRs offer you some profit to our area liquor shops, fuel stations, barbershops, and eating places, they take enterprise absent from our Two Trees Resort, Abbey’s Lantern Hill Inn, Stonecroft State Inn, and Mare’s B&B Inn. Inns, B&B’s, and resorts are taxed as professional uses, while STRs are taxed as residential employs, which is fundamentally unfair. STRs are related to non-hosted mini-lodges and should only be in business districts. I know that I would in no way lease or buy a house for my family that was around an STR.
On Thursday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m., the Ledyard Preparing and Zoning Fee will conduct a public hearing to consider a proposed zoning regulation modification to prohibit non-hosted STRs in one-family dwellings in household districts. I urge anyone who has or could be impacted by an STR party residence to attend and specific their opinions. A duplicate of the application and the ZOOM accessibility codes will be posted on Dec. 8 at https://townledyard.civicweb.net/portal/.
